A civic group known as the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens has formally written to the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), notifying the agency of its intention to commence a second phase of peaceful protest regarding the recent appointment of Executive Directors within the organisation.
According to the group, the planned protest aims to draw further attention to concerns surrounding the appointment process and to demand greater transparency and fairness in leadership decisions within the revenue agency.
Renewed Call for Transparency
In its letter, the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens emphasised that the demonstration would remain peaceful and lawful. The group stated that its objective is to ensure that public institutions maintain high standards of accountability, particularly in agencies responsible for managing national revenue.
The coalition argued that leadership appointments within the Nigeria Revenue Service carry significant national importance. Consequently, the group believes the process must reflect merit, integrity, and strict adherence to established procedures.
Members of the coalition stressed that public confidence in the nation’s tax administration system depends largely on the credibility of its leadership.
Escalation After Initial Engagement
The proposed second phase of protest follows an earlier round of demonstrations organised by the civic group. During the initial protests, members of the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens raised questions about the selection of certain Executive Directors and called for a review of the appointments.
However, the coalition maintains that its concerns have not yet received adequate attention. As a result, the group says it has decided to intensify its advocacy through another peaceful mobilisation.
By formally notifying the Nigeria Revenue Service of its intentions, the coalition stated that it seeks to maintain openness and respect for due process while exercising its constitutional right to peaceful assembly.
Importance of Public Institutions
Observers note that the Nigeria Revenue Service plays a central role in Nigeria’s fiscal framework. The agency oversees tax collection and other key revenue streams that support government operations and national development programmes.
Because of this critical responsibility, leadership appointments within the institution often attract strong public interest and scrutiny.
Advocacy groups frequently emphasise that strong governance within revenue agencies helps build trust between government and taxpayers. Transparency in recruitment and appointment processes also strengthens institutional credibility.
Commitment to Peaceful Demonstration
Despite the growing tension surrounding the issue, the Coalition of Concerned Nigerian Citizens reiterated that its protest will remain peaceful and orderly.
The group stated that it encourages participants to demonstrate responsibly and respect public order during the planned mobilisation. It also urged the leadership of the Nigeria Revenue Service to engage constructively with concerned stakeholders.
According to the coalition, dialogue between civic groups and public institutions remains the most effective pathway to resolving governance concerns.
Looking Ahead
As the planned protest approaches, attention is likely to focus on how the Nigeria Revenue Service responds to the concerns raised by the coalition.
Stakeholders across the public sector continue to stress the importance of transparency, fairness, and accountability in government institutions. Ultimately, these principles remain essential for strengthening Nigeria’s democratic governance and maintaining public trust in national institutions.
