Nigeria is actively participating in a major continental meeting on water and sanitation in Africa.
The Honourable Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr. Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, is attending the 30th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
He is joined by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Emanso Umobong, alongside technical directors and other staff members.
Their participation highlights Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening water access and sanitation systems across the country.
Launch of the AU 2026 Theme
A major highlight of the gathering was a high-level side event. During the session, African leaders officially launched the African Union 2026 Theme of the Year.
The theme focuses on “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”
This initiative aligns with the long-term development vision of the African Union under Agenda 2063, which aims to transform Africa into a prosperous and sustainable continent.
Strengthening Water Security in Africa
Access to clean water remains a major challenge in many African communities. Poor sanitation systems also continue to affect public health and economic development.
Therefore, the new AU theme seeks to mobilize governments, development partners, and institutions to prioritize water security.
It also encourages stronger investment in sanitation infrastructure, innovation, and policy reforms.
Nigeria’s Commitment
Nigeria’s delegation used the platform to engage with other African leaders and development experts.
The Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation continues to implement initiatives that expand water supply and improve sanitation nationwide.
Participation in the AU assembly allows Nigeria to share experiences, learn best practices, and strengthen regional cooperation.
Looking Ahead
The launch of the AU 2026 theme signals renewed continental focus on water sustainability.
With growing populations and climate challenges, African nations must strengthen water management strategies.
Events like the AU Assembly help align national efforts with continental goals.
For Nigeria, the engagement in Addis Ababa reflects a strong commitment to improving water access, sanitation, and sustainable development across the country.
