The Belgian federal prosecutor announced on Wednesday the initiation of an investigation into suspected Chinese cyber intrusions targeting the country’s intelligence agency, VSSE, which reportedly occurred in November 2023. This confirmation follows an earlier report by the Belgian newspaper Le Soir.
The prosecutor indicated that it had received a formal complaint from VSSE regarding the matter.
The Chinese embassy in Belgium has not yet responded to inquiries for comment.
According to Le Soir, hackers believed to be associated with Chinese espionage have allegedly taken advantage of a vulnerability in an American cybersecurity firm, allowing them to access approximately 10% of the emails belonging to the Belgian intelligence service over a two-year period. While classified information is said to have remained secure, the personal data of nearly half of the agency’s personnel may have been compromised, as reported by the newspaper.
