Three years following the onset of the conflict in Ukraine, France’s Assemblée Nationale expressed its unanimous backing for Kyiv on Monday, March 3. The government arranged a debate for MPs regarding Ukraine and European security, without a vote. During the session, which included Vadym Omelchenko, the Ukrainian ambassador to France, Prime Minister François Bayrou addressed the recent confrontation between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump at the White House on Friday. He described it as “a shocking moment, characterized by cruelty and degradation” towards the Ukrainian leader. However, he remarked, “President Zelensky did not capitulate, and I believe we should be thankful to him,” eliciting applause from French lawmakers.
Bayrou asserted that the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces on February 24, 2022, represented a “turning point between two worlds.” He noted that prior to that moment, there existed “safeguards among nations that could be invoked, treaties that could be referenced, resolutions that could be called upon, and commitments that could be recalled.”

Since the Russian invasion, and particularly with Trump’s return to the White House, “we have been alerted to accept practices that we oppose, to reassess the foundations of our freedoms, to reconsider our democratic principles and freedom of speech, and to forsake our commitment to decency in favor of the indecency they seek to impose on us,” he stated. From this point forward, “only force, violence, and brutality are required to resolve disputes,” Bayrou lamented, expressing concern over “the demise of just law and the dominance of the law of the strongest.”
