
On Monday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot announced that he had suggested at a European Union meeting the imposition of sanctions on individuals responsible for assaults against Syria’s Alawite community.
In recent weeks, Syria has experienced significant violence following claims by the Sunni Islamist-led authorities that their security forces were attacked by militants loyal to the deposed president, Bashar al-Assad, whose Alawite family hails from the coastal area.

This assault has resulted in extensive killings aimed at Alawites, representing the most severe violence since Assad’s removal in December after a protracted 14-year conflict.
