Seyi Tinubu has become the center of a contentious discussion following his recent charitable activities during Ramadan. What should have been a straightforward gesture of goodwill—providing food to those in need during this sacred month—has turned into a point of contention, with some alleging that he has shown disrespect towards the North.
One social media commentator, @Sarki_sultan, went as far as to declare, “You have disrespected Northern Nigeria in the eyes of the world during this Holy month of Ramadan by exploiting the masses, and we assure you that your father will pay for your sins in double!!! It’s only a matter of time.”
This remark prompts a critical inquiry: When did aiding the less fortunate become a wrongdoing?
During Ramadan, a period known for its emphasis on charity and compassion, Seyi Tinubu visited Northern states such as Kaduna and Kano, where he distributed food and interacted with local communities. In Kaduna, he provided iftar meals at Sultan Bello Mosque, met with Governor Uba Sani, and discussed initiatives for youth empowerment. In Kano, he continued his outreach by breaking fast with residents and political leaders at Al-Furqan Mosque.
What is objectionable about this? If anything, his actions embody the essence of true leadership—being engaged, listening to the community, and giving back. It is easy to criticize from behind a screen, but how many of those condemning him have actively participated in uplifting their own communities?
Nigerians have experienced more troubling conduct from their politicians and their families. Some only connect with the public during election periods, while others enjoy a life of luxury, entirely out of touch with the daily challenges faced by citizens. In contrast, there is a young man who has decided to make a positive impact by engaging directly with the community.
While Seyi Tinubu is not without flaws, and no one is claiming he is beyond reproach, one value that should bring Nigerians together is the spirit of generosity—especially during Ramadan. If there are valid concerns regarding youth empowerment or job creation, let’s have a meaningful dialogue about those topics. However, criticizing someone for providing food to those in need seems unwarranted.
In the end, actions carry more weight than social media posts. Regardless of individual views about him, Seyi Tinubu is taking steps that many others are unwilling to take. It may be time for Nigerians to concentrate on tackling genuine issues rather than targeting those who are at least trying to make a difference.
