A significant fire erupted in northern Paris on Monday, April 7, near a newly established court complex, prompting emergency services to urge the public to avoid the area. A dense plume of black smoke was visible throughout the French capital as firefighters worked to control the blaze that had engulfed one of the city’s largest recycling facilities. According to the fire brigade, approximately 60 fire trucks and 200 firefighters were deployed to the scene.
The flames illuminated the night sky, leading authorities to close sections of the main ring road around Paris to facilitate access for firefighting units, as reported by Geoffrey Boulard, the mayor of the affected 17th arrondissement, to French news outlet BFMTV.
“The building has been entirely destroyed,” he stated, noting that all personnel inside had been safely evacuated. “Firefighters responded promptly, but the fire originated underground and subsequently spread throughout the structure,” Boulard explained. The Paris fire brigade announced on the X platform that a “major fire” was ongoing and requested that the public “stay clear of the area to allow emergency services to operate.”

The fire occurred at the Syctom recycling plant, located adjacent to Paris’s primary court complex. This facility, which began operations in 2019, was intended to process household waste for nearly one million residents of Paris, according to city officials.
