
The federal government has completed and commissioned 565 water supply schemes, three multipurpose dams, four major irrigation projects, and multiple sanitation facilities in the last two years, according to Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation Prof. Joseph Utsev.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Prof. Utsev highlighted that these achievements align with the goals of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) on clean water and sanitation.
Key Infrastructure Completed
- Dams Inaugurated:
- Rafin Yashin Dam—Niger State
- Odo-Ape Hydropower Dam—Kogi State
- Amla Dam—Benue State
- Irrigation Projects:
- Bakalori (Zamfara) and Dadin-Kowa (Gombe) irrigation schemes
- Two micro-irrigation systems in Oyo and Jigawa supporting smallholder farmers
- Water Supply Projects:
- 565 water supply schemes under PEWASH, SURWASH, and AfDB, reaching 450,000+ beneficiaries
- 4 major water schemes completed in Jigawa, Yobe, and the FCT; 3 others in Gombe and Yobe at 90% completion
- Hydropower & Agro-Industrial Milestones:
- Kashimbila 40MW Hydropower Plant successfully concessioned
- Integrated Agro-Allied Cargo Airport in Taraba generated ₦7.1 billion in first five years of concession
Sanitation and Open Defecation-Free (ODF) Milestones
- 142 LGAs have now achieved ODF status, with 40 added in the last two years
- 159 sanitation facilities constructed in 23 states
- Public awareness campaigns launched in five languages, reaching 25 million Nigerians
