Former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Lawal Uwais, has passed away at the age of 88, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the country. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed deep condolences, highlighting Uwais’ steadfast integrity and dedication to Nigeria’s judiciary and democratic development.
In a statement by his special adviser, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised Uwais for navigating the judiciary through challenging times with wisdom and patience. Notably, Uwais played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s transition from military rule to democracy, serving as Chief Justice from 1995 to 2006. His tenure was marked by efforts to uphold judicial independence and constitutional principles.
Even after retirement, Uwais remained an influential voice in national affairs, chairing a federal panel on electoral reform under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. His contributions continue to shape Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen electoral processes.
His passing during the Islamic festival of Eid-al-Adha adds a solemn note for many Nigerians, especially the Muslim community. President Tinubu extended prayers for Uwais and expressed sympathy to his family, the Kaduna State government, and the judiciary.
Justice Uwais leaves behind a lasting legacy of fairness, transparency, and principled leadership, solidifying his place as one of Nigeria’s most respected legal minds.
