President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has thrown his full weight behind Nigeria’s ambition to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Speaking during a meeting with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) delegation at the State House in Abuja, Tinubu said Nigeria is ready to welcome the world and will provide every needed support. Tinubu backs Nigeria’s bid and believes the event will boost the nation’s global standing and inspire the youth.
The President expressed confidence in Nigeria’s capacity to organize a world-class event. He assured the CGF team that the country has the talent, the vision, and the infrastructure to deliver a successful Games. Tinubu said the government will not only support the bid but also ensure full collaboration with stakeholders to meet all requirements.
Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, was also present at the meeting. He explained that hosting the Games will serve as a turning point for Nigerian sports and national development. Tinubu listened as Enoh highlighted how Nigeria’s sports culture, large youth population, and existing sports facilities provide a solid foundation for the 2030 bid.
Tinubu backs Nigeria’s bid with clear intent and visible action. He said he will engage relevant ministries, agencies, and private sector partners to ensure the project receives full backing. The President emphasized that sports play a key role in national unity and development, and the Games would further strengthen those values.
President Tinubu also noted that hosting the Commonwealth Games would boost tourism, create jobs, and attract global attention to Nigeria. He encouraged the CGF to consider Nigeria’s track record in sports and its readiness to innovate. He praised the National Sports Commission and the Local Organising Committee for their hard work and coordination.
The CGF delegation, led by its President, Chris Jenkins, responded with optimism. Jenkins acknowledged Nigeria’s contributions to Commonwealth sports and applauded the country’s determination to lead. He said the CGF will take Tinubu’s commitment seriously and looks forward to further discussions.
Also present at the meeting was CGF Vice President, Kereyn Smith, and top sports administrators from across Nigeria. They expressed gratitude to the President and reiterated their faith in the country’s capacity to meet international standards. Tinubu appreciated their confidence and said Nigeria is committed to transparency, excellence, and inclusivity in its plans.
Nigeria has hosted major sporting events in the past, including the All-Africa Games and various continental championships. These past experiences provide a strong base for the 2030 Commonwealth Games project. Tinubu wants the country to use this opportunity to not only showcase its sporting strength but also promote unity, culture, and progress.
The bid process is ongoing, and Nigeria will continue to engage with international partners and sporting bodies. Tinubu’s leadership is proving to be a driving force behind this ambition. With strong backing from the highest level of government, Nigeria’s 2030 Games dream is steadily becoming a possibility.
