The Director General of Nigeria’s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Kashifu Inuwa, has underscored the vital role of digital literacy in shaping the country’s economic future. Speaking at the 7th Regular Meeting of the National Council on Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy in Kano State, Inuwa stressed that digital skills are no longer optional. He called them essential for inclusive and sustainable growth.
He noted that Nigeria has a large, youthful population with enormous potential. But to fully unlock this, the country must improve its digital capabilities. Inuwa said the Federal Government wants to close the digital divide and ensure all Nigerians—regardless of location or income—can access digital tools and education.
NITDA’s digital literacy push supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Plan. The agency has a clear roadmap with initiatives to build a strong and inclusive digital economy. Inuwa explained that these programs will not only create jobs but also help Nigerians compete in the global tech space.
He also pointed to two key policy documents—the Nigeria Digital Economy Bill and the National Digital Literacy Framework. These provide guidance for digital development nationwide. With consistent implementation, they can help Nigeria achieve 95% digital literacy by 2030.
NITDA is working with other government agencies, private partners, and community leaders to achieve this goal. Together, they are offering digital skills training, launching tech hubs, and supporting local startups. These programs focus on reaching underserved communities and giving youth a chance to grow.
Inuwa emphasized that the digital economy holds massive opportunities. But without basic digital knowledge, many Nigerians cannot benefit. He urged national stakeholders to treat digital literacy as a core pillar of development. Bridging the skills gap, he said, must be a national priority.
The Kano meeting gave digital sector leaders a chance to align efforts and discuss real-world progress. Key topics included policy execution, regional inclusion, and data protection. NITDA also shared updates and gained insights from stakeholders across the country.
NITDA’s digital literacy work is already making an impact. More Nigerians are gaining essential skills. More communities are connecting to the digital world. As the transformation moves forward, NITDA plans to lead with innovation, strong partnerships, and results-driven planning.
The agency’s mission is clear: equip Nigerians with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed. Inuwa concluded by saying that Nigeria’s future depends on how well it embraces digital inclusion. Every citizen must have the chance to take part.
By placing digital literacy at the center of national development, NITDA is helping to build a more connected, competitive, and resilient Nigeria.
