Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, is taking bold steps in the global fight against illicit financial flows. Under his leadership, FIRS will host a high-level international conference to address growing concerns over illegal cross-border money movements. Scheduled for July 24 and 25 in Abuja, the event will attract experts, policymakers, and global tax leaders.
Adedeji champions global action with a clear focus on curbing financial crimes and boosting Nigeria’s capacity to mobilize domestic resources. He believes illicit financial flows undermine national development and widen inequality, especially in developing nations. The conference aims to build global consensus and develop practical solutions for Africa and beyond.
Themed “Bolstering Tax Transparency, Mobilizing Domestic Revenue and Stemming Illicit Financial Flows,” the conference aligns with the African Union’s agenda and the Addis Ababa Action Framework on financing sustainable development. Adedeji explained that this gathering will strengthen Nigeria’s commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility. It will also enhance cooperation between African tax authorities and international partners.
He emphasized that the conference will help countries learn from each other and work together more effectively. Representatives from the United Nations, the African Union Commission, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and the African Tax Administration Forum will attend. Finance ministers and tax chiefs from across Africa will also participate in the two-day meeting.
Adedeji champions global action by ensuring Nigeria plays a central role in shaping global tax policy. He stated that FIRS commits to pushing reforms that prioritize fairness and transparency. He also wants developing countries to gain stronger voices in global financial discussions.
Illicit financial flows continue to drain national economies. In Africa, billions of dollars leave the continent each year through trade mispricing, tax evasion, and money laundering. Adedeji said tackling this issue goes beyond revenue—it’s about justice and economic independence.
He noted that fair tax collection and management enable governments to build roads, hospitals, schools, and essential infrastructure. This is why Nigeria must lead and support other nations facing similar challenges. He added that tax transparency fosters trust, and trust strengthens institutions.
The upcoming conference will also feature training sessions and panel discussions. These activities will build capacity for tax officials and expose them to international best practices. FIRS plans to use this opportunity to form partnerships that enhance enforcement and policy reforms.
Adedeji’s efforts reflect a larger vision. He aims to modernize Nigeria’s tax system and set a model for other developing nations. His recent reforms at FIRS have improved revenue generation and introduced more efficient digital systems. His leadership has attracted attention within and outside Nigeria.
With this conference, Adedeji seeks to place Nigeria at the center of the global conversation on tax justice and financial transparency. His proactive approach demonstrates that effective leadership can drive positive change locally and internationally. By taking the lead on this issue, Adedeji secures Nigeria’s future while contributing to a stronger and more equitable global economy.
