A tragic incident occurred near La Louviere, southern Belgium, where a highway bridge undergoing demolition collapsed, resulting in one fatality and two injuries, as reported by authorities on Thursday.
Mayor Jacques Gobert informed Reuters that a worker present on the steel structure at the time of the collapse lost his life, while two others sustained injuries when the bridge deck fell onto a barge positioned below to collect debris.
The bridge, which had been closed to traffic during the demolition process, was part of a dual-bridge system on the E42 highway spanning the “Canal du Centre.” Plans were in place for its reconstruction next year.

According to a spokesperson from the Sofico Wallonie local government highways agency, the other bridge had undergone renovations in recent years. Following the collapse, traffic on the renovated bridge was halted, but it was reopened by 1800 CET, allowing vehicles to travel in both directions.
