The All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its candidate for the 2027 presidential election, paving the way for him to seek a second term in office. The endorsement was made at the APC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on May 23, 2025.
Speaking after the meeting, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, stated that the party is “unanimously confident in President Tinubu’s leadership, his vision for a prosperous Nigeria, and his unwavering commitment to delivering on the Renewed Hope agenda.” He highlighted the administration’s efforts in tackling insecurity, boosting economic growth, and implementing social welfare programs as key reasons for the party’s support.
The endorsement comes amidst ongoing economic challenges, including rising inflation and unemployment, which have fueled debates about the effectiveness of current government policies. While the APC maintains that these challenges are being addressed through strategic interventions, opposition parties are likely to criticize the early endorsement as an attempt to stifle dissent and consolidate power.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition party, is expected to release a statement in the coming days outlining their response to the APC’s decision. Political analysts suggest that the early endorsement could galvanize the opposition and lead to a more intense and competitive political landscape in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
