Belgian prosecutors announced on Thursday the detention of several individuals in connection with suspected bribery linked to the European Parliament, allegedly benefiting China’s Huawei.
On Thursday morning, Belgian investigators conducted searches at 21 locations throughout Belgium and in Portugal. Following these actions, a judge requested the sealing of the offices belonging to two parliamentary assistants, according to federal prosecutors.
The corruption reportedly occurred discreetly since 2021, disguised as commercial lobbying, and involved payments for political favors, as well as lavish gifts including food, travel expenses, and regular invitations to football matches.
“The alleged bribery is claimed to have served Huawei’s interests,” stated the prosecutors.
Huawei did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters.
The European Parliament confirmed it had received a request for assistance from Belgian authorities regarding the investigation and pledged to comply fully and promptly.
