The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has warned against external interference in Venezuela’s internal affairs, reaffirming its support for the country’s sovereignty and the principles of international law.
In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, ECOWAS stressed that political disputes in sovereign nations must be resolved through constitutional and legal processes, cautioning that foreign intervention undermines global stability and the rule-based international order.
The statement followed the seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, by US forces during a pre-dawn raid on Saturday in Caracas. The couple were reportedly taken to New York to face charges of “narcoterrorism” linked to the alleged trafficking of tonnes of cocaine into the United States.

The regional bloc emphasised that respect for national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference remains fundamental to peaceful coexistence among states.
It called on all international actors to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could escalate tensions or worsen the political situation in Venezuela.
ECOWAS also underscored the importance of dialogue as the only sustainable path to resolving political disagreements, urging all stakeholders to prioritise peace, stability, and the welfare of the Venezuelan people.
Maduro is expected to appear in a New York court on Monday, just days after being seized in Caracas.
