BENIN CITY, Nigeria – Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has pledged to increase awareness and participation in Nigerian Army recruitment among the state’s youth, citing national security and youth empowerment as key priorities.
According to a statement, the Edo State government will intensify sensitization campaigns, particularly at the grassroots level, to encourage young people to consider careers in the military.
Governor Okpebholo, represented by his Chief of Staff, Gani Audu, made the pledge while receiving a delegation from the Chief of Army Staff, which is conducting a sensitization tour of Niger Delta states.

“The state will work with the Brigade Commander to establish a team that will reach all 18 local government areas of Edo State. This team will ensure the utilization of the state’s quota in the Nigerian Army,” Okpebholo stated.
The delegation, led by Brigadier General Wiito Nzidee, representing the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, aims to engage young people and promote awareness about the 89th Regular Recruit Intake.
Edo State has struggled to meet its recruitment quota, filling only 194 of the allocated 2,000 positions, significantly less than states like Kaduna, Adamawa, Bauchi, and Plateau.
Brigadier General Ebenezer Oduyebo, Commander of the 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, emphasized that the recruitment exercise offers opportunities for both strengthening national defense and providing employment and development for young people.
Governor Okpebholo assured that his administration would collaborate with military authorities to promote the recruitment exercise, aligning it with his administration’s focus on security, youth engagement, and economic growth
