
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on Sunday that he, along with the leaders of Britain, France, and Poland, intend to speak with U.S. President Donald Trump prior to Trump’s scheduled call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.
Merz stated that he had discussed the matter with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio during their attendance at Pope Leo XIV’s inaugural mass in the Vatican. He also mentioned having extensive conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy at the Vatican.

“I spoke with Marco Rubio, including about the call tomorrow. We agreed that we will speak again with the four state leaders and the U.S. president in preparation of this conversation (with Putin),” Merz told reporters.
