European Union Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic stated on Friday that he conveyed to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer that the tariffs imposed by the U.S. are unwarranted.
In a candid two-hour discussion with Secretary Lutnick and Ambassador Greer, Sefcovic expressed his concerns, stating on the social media platform X, “I was clear: U.S. tariffs are harmful and unjustified.”
He emphasized the need for a new strategy in the EU-U.S. trade relationship, asserting that while the EU is dedicated to engaging in substantial negotiations, it is also ready to protect its interests. “We will maintain communication,” he added.
Former President Trump has imposed a blanket 20% duty on EU imports entering the U.S.
The EU is currently split on the most effective way to respond to Trump’s tariffs, including the potential use of its ‘Anti-Coercion Instrument,’ which enables the bloc to retaliate against third countries that exert economic pressure on EU member states to alter their policies.
