Lagos, Nigeria – Dame Abimbola Fashola, the former First Lady of Lagos State, celebrated her 60th birthday on April 6th, drawing praise for her enduring contributions to education, public health, and socio-economic development in Nigeria’s commercial hub.
Dame Fashola, wife of prominent politician Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN), a former Lagos Governor and ex-Minister of Works and Housing, remains a respected figure in Lagos and beyond. President Bola Tinubu lauded her commitment to societal progress, particularly her focus on women and children’s health.
“Dame Fashola’s leadership in health advocacy and family values is noteworthy,” President Tinubu stated in a congratulatory message. He highlighted her efforts to raise awareness about critical health issues, such as breast and cervical cancer screening, and her dedication to improving the well-being of women and children.
Her work with the Committee of Wives of Lagos State Officials (COWLSO) was also recognized, with President Tinubu noting her role in establishing community recreation centers and launching health outreach programs that have impacted numerous lives.
Interestingly, President Tinubu also emphasized the Fashola family’s interfaith harmony as a model for national unity. “Her marriage – rooted in mutual respect and religious tolerance – is a powerful example of peaceful coexistence,” he said. “She is a devout Christian, and her husband a Muslim, yet together they’ve built a strong family rooted in love and understanding. This unity is a cornerstone of national peace and development.”
In a country often marked by religious and ethnic tensions, the Fashola family’s example of interfaith harmony offers a compelling narrative. Dame Fashola’s legacy extends beyond her role as First Lady, showcasing the potential for individuals to contribute to societal well-being through advocacy and community engagement.
