On Friday, March 14, Paris, Rome, and London announced their decision to procure new air defense missiles following a surprising shift in U.S. policy regarding its relationship with Europe. European nations are feeling the pressure to enhance their defense capabilities after U.S. President Donald Trump raised doubts about the United States’ ongoing role as the primary security guarantor for Europe since World War II, particularly within NATO.
In a joint statement, the three countries confirmed the acquisition of 218 additional Aster missiles and expedited the delivery of previously ordered Aster missiles.
This agreement highlights the steadfast commitment of France, Italy, and the United Kingdom to strengthen their air defense systems. French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu noted on X that this arrangement would facilitate the quicker delivery of 134 missiles ordered in December 2022, starting in 2025.
The Aster 15 and 30 missiles are manufactured by the pan-European company MBDA. The new order includes an undisclosed quantity of Aster 30 B1 missiles, which are set to be operational next year and will be integrated into the future SAMP/T land-to-air defense systems of France and Italy, as well as the naval vessels of all three nations.

These missiles are designed to target objects at altitudes of 2,500 meters within a range of 150 kilometers. They are capable of intercepting aircraft, medium-range ballistic missiles, and hypersonic weapons traveling at speeds exceeding five times the speed of sound. According to the French Institute of International Relations, the cost of a single Aster 30 missile is estimated to exceed €2 million. The order also encompasses an unspecified number of new Aster 15 missiles intended for use by the French navy.
