The prison staff must be shown our support. Following a recent wave of assaults on correctional facilities and their personnel during the night of April 21 to April 22, French Prime Minister François Bayrou, along with Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, issued a statement.
The government officials visited the Saint-Quentin-Fallavier prison in the southeast, fully aware that the staff there, overwhelmed by a surge of fires, vandalism, and shootings aimed at prison facilities and employees, were eagerly anticipating their arrival. On the night from Sunday to Monday, in the nearby town of Villefontaine, several homes belonging to prison guards were attacked with arson and gunfire.
A day later, a new series of incidents, less severe than those reported in the previous ten days, occurred across France. Several vehicles were set ablaze in the parking area of the prison integration and probation service in Caen, while a personal vehicle and a mailbox were vandalized with the inscription ‘DDPF,’ which stands for ‘Defense of the Rights of French Prisoners,’ a questionable acronym seen at many locations targeted by recent attacks in Oise.
