Amid concerns about the performance of French female players, French Tennis Federation (FFT) President Gilles Moretton addressed the press on May 26, 2025, following the opening of the French Open. Moretton acknowledged the challenges facing French women’s tennis and emphasized the importance of a positive perspective, highlighting successful qualifying performances and expressing optimism for players born in 2012-2014.
However, after the first round, only three Frenchwomen advanced to the second round, equaling the low marks of 1983 and 2019 – the worst results since the tournament draw expanded to 128 players. Of the nine French players in the main draw, Léolia Jeanjean, Elsa Jacquemot, and Loïs Boisson were the only ones to progress.
Their participation in the main draw was largely facilitated by the FFT’s allocation of eight wild card entries. Jeanjean advanced after Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu retired due to injury (0-6, 7-5, 3-0). Jacquemot defeated Greece’s Maria Sakkari (6-3, 7-6). Boisson secured a notable victory over the 24th seed, Elise Mertens of Belgium (6-4, 4-6, 6-3).
