Germany is encountering a “new unpredictability” in its relationship with the United States and will need to enhance its military leadership in light of the unprecedented challenges posed by Russia’s war in Ukraine, stated Defence Minister Boris Pistorius on Wednesday.
In Berlin, shortly after the German conservatives led by Friedrich Merz secured a coalition agreement with the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD), Pistorius emphasized that the new government must take greater responsibility for European security.
“There is a new unpredictability in our transatlantic relations,” remarked Pistorius, who is expected to continue as defence minister in Merz’s forthcoming administration.
“The United States remains committed to NATO, but they rightly expect a stronger contribution from Europe within the alliance,” he noted.

“We will collaborate with our European partners and NATO allies, and we will need to take on significantly more leadership as we move forward,” Pistorius added.
Merz, who has previously described President Donald Trump’s America as an unreliable ally, has pledged to increase defense spending as Europe confronts a threatening Russia and to assist businesses facing high costs and low demand.
