Europe seeks collaboration with the United States; however, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Sunday that the EU is prepared to respond collectively if Washington imposes tariffs on steel and aluminum, leaving them no alternative.
During the opening of the Hanover industrial trade fair, which features Canada as this year’s partner country, Scholz emphasized Canada’s status as an independent nation.
U.S. President Donald Trump has previously suggested the idea of annexing Canada, referring to it as the 51st state of the U.S.
“We stand by your side!” Scholz declared, asserting, “Canada is not a territory belonging to anyone else. Canada is a proud, independent nation.”

In response to Trump’s proposed tariffs, Scholz articulated that his counter to “America first” policies is to advocate for increased free trade, enhanced competitiveness, and greater technological independence.
He asserted that Europe is neither naive nor weak, noting that trade wars are detrimental to all parties involved.
“I urge the United States: Europe’s aim is to foster cooperation. However, if the U.S. forces our hand with tariffs on steel and aluminum, the EU will respond unitedly.”
