Hamas has accepted a ceasefire proposal from mediators Egypt and Qatar, as announced by the group’s leader on Saturday.
Khalil al-Hayya stated in a televised address, “We received a proposal from the mediators in Egypt and Qatar two days ago, which we viewed positively and have accepted.”
He expressed hope that the Israeli occupation would not disrupt the agreement, as he leads the Hamas negotiating team in indirect discussions aimed at establishing a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Israel that began in October 2023.

Security sources informed Reuters on Thursday that Egypt had received encouraging signals from Israel regarding a new ceasefire plan that would incorporate a transitional phase.
According to the sources, the proposal includes the release of five Israeli hostages by Hamas each week.
The Israeli prime minister’s office confirmed that it had engaged in a series of discussions regarding the proposal from the mediators and had submitted a counter-proposal in full collaboration with the United States.
When Reuters inquired whether the prime minister’s office had agreed to the ceasefire proposal, there was no immediate response.
