Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Saturday called on Israel to halt its military offensive in Gaza, stating that Palestinian civilians should no longer bear the brunt of the conflict.
“We have to tell the Israeli government ‘that’s enough’,” Tajani said in a statement.
“We no longer want to see the Palestinian population suffer. Stop the attacks, let’s secure a ceasefire, free the hostages, but leave in peace a people who are victims of Hamas,” he added.
His remarks followed an announcement by the Israeli military that it was mobilizing to expand operations in the Gaza Strip, while Palestinian health authorities reported that at least 146 people had been killed in the past 24 hours due to ongoing Israeli airstrikes.
Tajani’s comments reflect increasing international concern regarding Israel’s sustained attacks on Gaza, which began after Hamas militants launched a deadly cross-border assault on Israel on October 7, taking approximately 250 people hostage.
Israel’s military campaign has devastated the densely populated Gaza Strip, displacing nearly all of its 2 million residents and resulting in the deaths of over 53,000 people, according to Gaza health authorities.
Tajani is scheduled to meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Rome later on Saturday.
While the Italian government has been among Israel’s strongest supporters in Europe, growing unease is emerging regarding the widespread devastation in Gaza.
