Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday her commitment to protect businesses adversely affected by the tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Meloni is navigating a complex diplomatic situation, as she is aligned with Trump while also needing to advocate for the Italian export sector, which stands to be impacted by the proposed 20% tariff on European Union goods.
“We do not agree with the United States’ decision, but we are prepared to utilize all necessary tools—both in negotiations and economically—to support our businesses and sectors that may be adversely affected,” Meloni stated in a video message to a congress of the League party, a coalition partner.
She urged the EU to reconsider regulations and policies, including the Green Deal environmental initiative, which she believes hinder business growth.

“We strongly urge Europe to reassess the ideological regulations of the Green Deal and the excessive regulations across all sectors, as they create internal barriers that would only exacerbate the external tariffs,” she emphasized.
Italian media reported on Sunday that Meloni may meet Trump in Washington during the week of April 14 for discussions. She attended his inauguration in January, making this her first visit since that event.
