On the evening of March 5, President Emmanuel Macron delivered a significant address to the nation, reminiscent of the Covid-19 era, as he appeared on screens across France at 8 pm, clad in a black suit. He acknowledged the “legitimate concerns” of the French people regarding the growing ties between the United States and Russia, which he indicated were occurring at Ukraine’s expense. Macron emphasized that this shift is ushering Europe into “a new era.” While he recognized that Donald Trump’s America remains an ally, he characterized Russia as “a threat to Europe,” noting that its aggressive actions “seem to know no borders.”

In a 15-minute speech, Macron cautioned that remaining passive in the face of such global dangers would be “madness.”His remarks were made just before an extraordinary European Council meeting in Brussels scheduled for Thursday, focused on supporting Ukraine and bolstering European defense. This comes at a time when Trump is looking to accelerate negotiations with Russia, potentially aligning with Vladimir Putin’s perspectives. Macron firmly stated, “The road to peace cannot pass through the abandonment of Ukraine,” asserting that “peace cannot be a Russian diktat.”
