
French President Emmanuel Macron expressed optimism about ongoing trade discussions between the United States and the European Union, following a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Macron stated that the two leaders had a “good exchange” and voiced his hope for a return to the lowest possible tariffs to facilitate fruitful trade.
Speaking to reporters during a trip to Vietnam, Macron also reiterated his view that tariffs are not the appropriate solution for addressing trade imbalances.
An EU spokesperson confirmed that the weekend call between Trump and von der Leyen provided “new impetus” to the trade negotiations.

Following the conversation, Trump suspended his threat to impose 50% tariffs on imports from the EU in the coming month, extending the deadline to July 9 to allow for further negotiations between Washington and the EU.
The EU spokesperson also noted that von der Leyen initiated the phone call.
