Far-right leader Marine Le Pen has previously remained silent regarding the provocations from US President Donald Trump, including his derogatory remarks about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the political meddling by his associates in European elections. However, on Tuesday, March 4, she publicly distanced herself from the Trump administration for the first time, responding to her political opponents who highlighted her perceived complicity with Trump, reminiscent of her past alignment with Vladimir Putin.
In statements made to Le Figaro on Tuesday, she criticized the “brutality” associated with the cessation of US aid to Ukraine, while stopping short of commenting on the merits of the decision itself. “No one can compel the US to continue its support if it chooses not to,” stated the candidate for her fourth presidential election. “However, it is crucial to allow Ukraine a reasonable timeframe to devise a solution.”
Additionally, she distanced herself from US Vice President JD Vance after he ridiculed the proposed Franco-British security initiative for Ukraine, which he described as “20,000 troops from some random country that hasn’t fought a war in 30 or 40 years.”
