In a significant nod to Nigeria’s advancing technology sector, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has gained international acclaim for its innovative efforts. The agency’s Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, received recognition at the UK House of Parliament for driving innovation across Africa. Organisers presented the award during the African Industrial and Development Conference and Awards, held in London.
This moment marks a proud milestone for Nigeria, as Halilu became the first CEO of a Nigerian government agency to earn such an honour at the British Parliament. The event drew key figures in industrial development and African innovation, spotlighting NASENI’s growing impact on the global technology landscape.
Halilu’s leadership has led NASENI to strengthen partnerships between Nigeria and international stakeholders while facilitating technology transfer, particularly in manufacturing and renewable energy. His 2023 appointment under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda has since guided the agency’s transformative strides. The recent honour reinforces that NASENI’s direction aligns with global innovation standards.
The Africa Leadership Magazine and members of the UK House of Lords jointly presented the award. The event attracted policymakers, industry leaders, and innovators from across the continent. Attendees applauded Halilu for his efforts to promote smart technology, youth engagement, and grassroots innovation, especially as one of the youngest chief executives to lead a federal agency.
During his speech, Halilu thanked the organisers and reaffirmed NASENI’s dedication to advancing Africa through technology. He emphasized that the honour reflected the collective work of his team and the bold vision of the current administration.
“Our goal at NASENI is to make Nigeria a hub for technology in Africa,” Halilu said. “This recognition strengthens our resolve to do even more and to prove that Nigerians can compete globally in science, innovation and industrial development.”
The UK Parliament event also served as a platform to evaluate Africa’s progress and to recognise the role of organisations like NASENI in driving continental growth. Halilu’s presence and message stood out among the highlights, prompting several calls for stronger collaboration among governments, private investors and innovators to boost Africa’s industrial capacity.
NASENI’s innovation strategy now serves as a model for other countries in the region. The agency’s commitment to research and development, infrastructure and sustainable partnerships has earned international credibility. With more global recognition on the horizon, NASENI is poised to deepen its role in shaping Africa’s future.
From Abuja to London, NASENI continues to emerge as a symbol of what becomes possible when strong policy, bold innovation and effective leadership converge.
