The Dutch government announced on Wednesday that it has signed an agreement with German-French arms manufacturer KNDS to purchase at least 46 Leopard 2A8 tanks. This acquisition marks the re-establishment of a Dutch tank unit after more than a decade.
The tanks are scheduled for delivery between 2028 and 2031 and are part of the Netherlands’ effort to increase military spending to meet NATO’s target of allocating at least 2% of GDP to defense.
The new tank battalion, which may be expanded with an additional six tanks, will be stationed in Germany and will consist of approximately 500 soldiers, according to a government statement.
