
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is doubling down on its pledge to complete ongoing infrastructure projects across the region, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to accelerate development efforts. Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku emphasized that the commission remains steadfast in realizing the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, ensuring that key projects are completed on schedule.
During a meeting with civil society and human rights leaders from the nine Niger Delta states, Ogbuku reiterated the agency’s commitment to driving meaningful change. “The President gave us a clear mandate to positively transform the Niger Delta region,” he stated.
Key Infrastructure Commitments
- Project Continuity: Roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals currently under construction will be completed as planned.
- Audit & Institutional Reforms: NDDC has partnered with KPMG for a comprehensive operational review, with full implementation of audit recommendations beginning next month to boost transparency.
- Major Infrastructure Milestones:
- Repairs on the Auchi-Eruwe Road
- Reconstruction of Owerri-Port Harcourt Road (Umuapu–Umuagwo section)
- Resumption of work on Kaa-Ataba Road and bridges in Rivers State
- Continued collaboration with NLNG on the Bonny Ring Road
Empowering Communities and Youth
NDDC is spearheading the “Light Up the Niger Delta” project, deploying solar-powered streetlights to combat insecurity and stimulate economic activity. Additionally, the commission has initiated payments for 10,000 beneficiaries under the Youth Internship Scheme, focusing on vocational training and employment data collection.
Civil Society Commends Progress
Charles Tariah, a leader of the civil society delegation, praised NDDC’s efforts, particularly its transparency and inclusive approach to development. “We acknowledge the remarkable progress in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and community engagement,” he remarked.
With a renewed emphasis on governance, transparency, and infrastructure development, NDDC’s latest commitments signal a determined push to uplift the Niger Delta and ensure lasting economic growth.
