The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is committed to playing a strategic role in advancing education in Nigeria’s Niger Delta region, according to Managing Director and CEO Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.
Speaking at the 2025 Moot Court and Mock Trial Competition, Ogbuku emphasized that education is crucial for sustainable development, capacity building, poverty reduction, and violence eradication in the region.
The competition, featuring law students from universities across the Niger Delta, is part of the NDDC’s 25th-anniversary celebrations and aims to showcase advocacy skills and intellectual talent. Approximately 20 universities are expected to participate, making this year’s event larger and more competitive than the previous edition.
Represented by Executive Director of Finance and Administration Boma Iyaye, Ogbuku encouraged participants to engage in intellectually stimulating arguments that address the unique challenges of the region and offer solutions to inform future law-making and promote sustainable development.
Ogbuku stressed the importance of intellectual capital in advocating for the rights of the Niger Delta, arguing that it is a more powerful tool than militancy and violence.
He quoted Mahatma Gandhi, saying: “Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment, for full effort is full victory.”
Ogbuku highlighted the NDDC’s significant contributions to education in the region, including foreign scholarship programs, infrastructure projects, and human capacity development initiatives. He noted that the current leadership, under Chiedu Ebie, has invested heavily in education, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda
