Benin City, Nigeria – Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced a zero-tolerance policy towards kidnapping and violent crime, vowing to enforce the death penalty for convicted kidnappers in the state. This decisive move aims to curb the rising wave of criminal activity and restore public safety.
During a recent high-level security meeting in Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government Area, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the lives and property of Edo residents. He stated his readiness to sign death warrants for those found guilty of kidnapping, underscoring his dedication to the rule of law.
The Edo State House of Assembly has reinforced this initiative by amending the Kidnapping Prohibition Law, now prescribing death by hanging for convicted kidnappers. The legislation also stipulates that any property used in the commission of kidnapping will be confiscated and demolished, with the potential for conversion into security facilities.
Beyond legal measures, Governor Okpebholo is prioritizing collaboration between the government, traditional institutions, and security agencies to enhance intelligence gathering and ensure rapid response to security threats. Community leaders, political stakeholders, and law enforcement officials are being mobilized to support these efforts.
These comprehensive actions represent a key component of Governor Okpebholo’s broader strategy to restore peace, security, and public confidence across Edo State, sending a clear message that criminal activity will not be tolerated.
