The Federal Government of Nigeria has commenced a major project to rehabilitate and upgrade the Ugbera-Gboko Water Project, a multi-billion naira initiative designed to significantly improve access to clean and potable water for residents of Benue State and surrounding areas. The groundbreaking ceremony took place at the Gboko Water Treatment Plant in Ameladu, marking the official start of the project.
The project, approved by the Federal Executive Council under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, involves an investment of over eighteen billion naira to Messrs Ceylon Construction Services Limited. The anticipated completion timeframe for the rehabilitation and upgrade is eighteen months.
This investment underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing critical water infrastructure needs and ensuring access to safe water for its citizens, a key component of its broader public health and development strategy. Access to clean water remains a significant challenge in many parts of Nigeria, impacting public health, sanitation, and economic productivity.

The Federal Ministry of Water Resources plays a crucial role in establishing the overall policy framework, coordinating efforts, and monitoring water infrastructure projects across the country. The Ministry also intervenes in states and local governments facing acute water challenges, recognizing that the provision of potable water and sanitation services is a shared responsibility across all levels of government.
The Ugbera-Gboko Water Project aims to revitalize existing waterworks in Ameladu, Mkar, and Buruku, which have suffered from vandalism and neglect. Once completed, the upgraded water treatment plant will source water from the River Katsina Ala, treat it to international standards, and distribute it to Gboko, Mkar, and neighboring communities, benefiting an estimated 500,000 residents. This will have a direct and positive impact on public health, sanitation, and the overall quality of life for the people in the region.
The government has expressed its gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to funding the project, as well as to the National Assembly, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator Doctor George Akume, and other stakeholders who played a key role in facilitating the launch of this important initiative. The successful completion of the Ugbera-Gboko Water Project will serve as a model for future water infrastructure development projects in Nigeria and contribute to the country’s progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.
