The Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, has urged officers and men of the newly created Nigerian Navy Marines to prepare for demanding operational conditions as they deploy to various theatres across the country.
Addressing the personnel during a briefing, the Defence Chief emphasized that the Marines will operate in complex and high-risk environments. Therefore, he called on them to demonstrate resilience, discipline, and professionalism at all times.
Preparing for Challenging Theatres
General Oluyede stressed that modern security threats require specialized capabilities. The establishment of the Nigerian Navy Marines, he explained, aims to strengthen amphibious operations, coastal security, and rapid response missions.
However, he made it clear that the assignments ahead will not be easy. From riverine zones to conflict-prone regions, the Marines must adapt quickly and operate effectively under pressure. Consequently, he encouraged them to intensify training and maintain peak operational readiness.
Strengthening National Security
The Defence Chief also highlighted the strategic importance of the new unit within Nigeria’s broader security framework. As threats evolve, security forces must respond with improved coordination and specialized skills. The Navy Marines, he noted, will play a critical role in countering maritime crime, insurgency, and other asymmetric threats.
Moreover, he emphasized teamwork and inter-agency collaboration. Successful operations, he said, depend on strong cooperation between the Navy, Army, Air Force, and other security agencies.
Upholding Professional Standards
In addition, General Oluyede reminded the personnel to uphold the highest standards of conduct. While carrying out their duties, they must respect human rights and adhere strictly to operational rules of engagement.
He urged them to represent the Armed Forces with honor and integrity, adding that the nation places significant trust in their capabilities.
Ultimately, the charge serves as both a warning and motivation. As the Nigerian Navy Marines begin operations across various theatres, they carry the responsibility of strengthening national security and protecting the country’s territorial integrity under challenging conditions.
