In response to the recent violence in Benue State, Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for swift and coordinated action. During a meeting in Abuja with Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, the president reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to protecting all Nigerians. He emphasized the urgency of the crisis and the importance of long-term peacebuilding in the region.
The president’s remarks followed growing concerns about persistent attacks in Benue communities, which have caused major loss of life and property. He expressed sympathy for the victims and pledged federal support to strengthen local peace and security efforts. Tinubu urged Governor Alia to lead reconciliation by working closely with traditional rulers, community leaders, and other stakeholders.
President Tinubu also directed security agencies to act quickly and professionally. He highlighted the need for intelligence-led operations and better coordination among forces. Frequent updates to the public, he added, would help build transparency and trust. He said that true peace comes from justice and accountability, achievable only through inclusive governance and strong community ties.
Calling for unity, the president encouraged Governor Alia to engage leaders across political lines. “A true leader is one who builds bridges,” he said. “You must be a symbol of unity for all people of Benue State.”
He further noted the link between peace and economic development. Without security, rebuilding communities and reviving the economy would be difficult. Tinubu promised that the federal government would continue to support the state’s recovery efforts.
The president also appealed directly to the people of Benue. He asked them to move forward and support efforts to rebuild trust and stability. “Forgiveness is the first step toward rebuilding,” he said. “Let’s work together to create an atmosphere where peace can thrive.”
Governor Alia thanked President Tinubu for his leadership and pledged to follow through on his directives. He promised to step up reconciliation in conflict-hit areas and push for lasting peace and development.
Observers have described Tinubu’s intervention as a turning point in the federal response to the Benue crisis. Many say his approach, balancing firm security action with empathy and dialogue, offers a valuable model for resolving similar conflicts.
The presidency will continue to monitor developments closely, with regular briefings from security agencies. Tinubu’s actions, many believe, reflect a broader national security vision and his deep commitment to unity.
