ABUJA, Nigeria – Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun continues to lead the Nigeria Police Force during a period of significant security challenges and growing public demands for institutional reform. Appointed in June 2023 by President Bola Tinubu, Egbetokun has been recognized for his professionalism and commitment to upholding law and order.
However, recent protests led by activist Omoyele Sowore have called for Egbetokun’s removal, citing alleged retirement age limitations and concerns about growing insecurity. The protests, staged at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, highlight ongoing scrutiny of the police leadership and the need for greater accountability.
While the claims regarding Egbetokun’s tenure are under legal and institutional review, his administration has undertaken several community-focused and intelligence-led policing strategies. The Nigeria Police Force has prioritized officer welfare, digital transformation, and inter-agency collaboration to combat crime. Despite ongoing security issues across the country, the police force has recorded operational successes, including the dismantling of kidnap syndicates and the recovery of arms.

The situation is further complicated by a cybercrime charge against Sowore, related to statements made about the IGP on social media. The case remains before the Federal High Court in Abuja, raising questions about freedom of speech and the use of cybercrime laws to silence critics.
As Nigeria continues to grapple with complex security challenges, IGP Egbetokun remains focused on reforming the police institution, improving accountability, and enhancing national security. His role will be crucial in shaping a police force that earns public trust and ensures justice for all.
