Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tariq al-Said is scheduled to visit Moscow on Monday, shortly after the commencement of Muscat-mediated nuclear discussions between the U.S. and Iran.
On Tuesday, the sultan will engage in discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as announced by the Kremlin.
The U.S. and Iran initiated a new phase of nuclear negotiations in Rome on Saturday, aiming to address their long-standing conflict regarding Tehran’s nuclear ambitions, amidst President Donald Trump’s warning of potential military action should diplomatic efforts fail.
Prior to the talks on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi met with his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, in Moscow. Following their discussion, Lavrov expressed Russia’s willingness to “assist, mediate, and play any role that would be advantageous for both Iran and the U.S.”
Moscow has historically been involved in Iran’s nuclear negotiations, serving as a veto-holding member of the U.N. Security Council and a signatory to a previous agreement that Trump withdrew from in 2018.
The discussions during the sultan’s visit to Moscow will center on collaboration regarding regional and global matters, according to statements from both the Omani state news agency and the Kremlin, although no further specifics were provided.
Additionally, the two leaders are anticipated to address trade and economic relations, as noted by the Kremlin.
