George Simion, the leader of the far-right Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR), is heading into the second round of the Romanian presidential election, scheduled for May 18, with confidence. At 38 years old, this nationalist leader and vocal supporter of Donald Trump aims to establish a sovereignist alliance within the European Union (EU). He looks to Italy’s Giorgia Meloni, another political figure he admires, as a key partner in this endeavor, having visited her in Rome on Wednesday.
“We have friends, we have allies, but most importantly, we have God!” Simion posted on Facebook alongside a photo of himself with Meloni. The day before, he was in Poland to support Karol Nawrocki, the PiS candidate for the presidency, sharing a campaign rally in Zabrze. The first round of the Polish presidential election will be held concurrently with the second round in Romania. “Together, we will oppose illegal immigration and anti-American sentiments in Europe!” Simion declared at the rally, wearing his signature white shirt. “You are our brothers!” he added, addressing the enthusiastic crowd.
