
Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto of Sokoto State has extended heartfelt condolences to his Kano State counterpart, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, and the people of Kano State following the tragic death of 22 Kano athletes in a road accident.
The athletes were returning from Abeokuta, Ogun State, where they had successfully participated in the recently concluded National Sports Festival, when the fatal crash occurred.
In a statement signed by his Press Secretary, Abubakar Bawa, Governor Aliyu described the incident as a national tragedy, mourning the loss of young and promising Nigerians who had contributed to promoting unity and peace through sports.
“It is our heartfelt prayer that Almighty Allah forgives them their shortcomings, grants them Aljannah Firdaus, and comforts their families and the people of Kano,” the governor stated.
He assured the Kano governor and citizens of Sokoto’s solidarity, adding,
“This is a painful loss not just to Kano but to the entire nation.”
Governor Aliyu urged the public to see the tragedy as divine will, while praying for strength and faith for the bereaved families.
He also called on relevant authorities to step up efforts in ensuring safer transportation for athletes and citizens to prevent future tragedies.
