On March 6, the court imposed a fine of 34 million euros ($36.7 million) on Germany for failing to adhere to EU-wide whistleblower protection regulations. The Czech Republic received a fine of 2.3 million euros, while Hungary was penalized 1.75 million euros. Both Luxembourg and Estonia were fined up to 500,000 euros each.
These fines are a result of a 2019 agreement among EU member states that mandated the establishment of internal reporting channels for whistleblowers and the provision of safeguards against retaliation, such as termination, demotion, or legal repercussions.
