With the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled to end on 8th September 2025, Nigeria’s diplomat and Vice Chair of the Second Committee, Ezekwesiri David Anyaegbu, has handed over to the elected members of the Second Committee Bureau for the 80th Session.
The 79th Session Bureau of the Second Committee (otherwise known as the UN Economic and Financial Committee) concluded its work for the session through a flurry of activities over the last few weeks, which included discussions on the revitalization of the work of the committee and combined bureau meetings to usher in the new set of elected representatives.
With the absence of a substantive Second Committee Chair for the session earlier in June 2025, Anyaegbu presided over the election of a chair for the remainder of the session in the UN General Assembly.
The six committees of the United Nations General Assembly elected officers for the 80th Session (UNGA80), including the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock (Germany), on 2nd June 2025. The elected bureau of the Second Committee for the 80th Session will assume duties on 9th September 2025, the opening day of the 80th Session.
Lamin B. Dibba, Ambassador/Permanent Representative of The Gambia, is the chair of the 80th Session of the Second Committee, while Weronika Garbacz (Poland), Andres Napuri Pita (Peru), and Jenni Mikkola (Finland) are the newly elected vice-chairs for the session. The rapporteur for the session is Javad Momeni of Iran.
Anyaegbu, during his tenure as the vice chair of the UN Second Committee, coordinated the facilitation of UN microeconomic resolutions on investment, debt, trade, financing for development, illicit financial flows, and tax reforms.
He is one of the very few Nigerians to serve as a principal officer in a UN session. The last time a Nigerian was elected to serve in a UN Session was in 2019, when Tijjani Muhammad-Bande served as the President of the UN General Assembly.
