President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated on Saturday that Ukraine anticipates a robust reaction from Western nations in response to the frequent Russian drone assaults on its territory.
Shortly after Zelenskiy’s remarks, made during his nightly video address, officials in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, reported a large-scale Russian drone strike that resulted in one fatality and injuries to up to 14 individuals.
Overnight, drones targeted the southeastern city of Dnipro, claiming four lives, and also struck the central city of Kryvyi Rih, where nine people were injured.
Zelenskiy emphasized in his address, “Our allies must recognize that these Russian attacks are aimed not only at our citizens but also at all international and diplomatic efforts to bring an end to this conflict.”
He highlighted that 172 drones were launched at Ukraine overnight, with the Ukrainian military successfully intercepting 94 of them.
“Russia is attacking everyone who is working towards ending the war. We cannot overlook the hundreds of Iranian-designed Shahed drones that are deployed every night.”
“We are looking for a response, a significant one. We are actively seeking to ensure a strong reaction, particularly from the United States, Europe, and all those globally who depend on diplomatic solutions.”
In the past week, the U.S. has facilitated two ceasefires—one aimed at allowing shipping through the Black Sea and another focused on halting attacks on energy infrastructure.
Both Ukraine and Russia have accused each other of breaching the agreement concerning energy sites.
Zelenskiy also mentioned that he had discussions with Ukraine’s chief military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, regarding the situation along the 1,000-kilometer (621-mile) front line established since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. They also talked about areas “where our forces are operating within Russian territory.”
“We are implementing active strategies to prevent the occupiers from advancing into the Sumy and Kharkiv regions of Ukraine,” Zelenskiy stated.
Ukrainian forces continue to be active in the Kursk region of western Russia, seven months following a cross-border incursion, despite Russian troops having regained some territory.
On Friday, Zelenskiy announced that Ukrainian forces had implemented “certain measures” in areas of Russia beyond the Kursk region to alleviate the pressure on their troops stationed there.
