The Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State has adopted former governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu as its consensus candidate for the 2027 governorship election, as the party declared its determination to wrest power from the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Adebutu, who flew the PDP flag in the 2023 governorship election, emerged as the party’s consensus candidate during a gathering of party leaders, stakeholders and members held in Abeokuta on Sunday.
The PDP chieftain said he was prepared to provide what he described as good governance and rescue Ogun State from hardship and maladministration under the APC-led administration.
He accused the state government of failing residents despite Ogun’s economic and human potential, insisting the state deserved more purposeful leadership.
In his acceptance speech after his emergence, Adebutu described the development as historic and expressed appreciation to party members for entrusting him with the party’s ticket.
He said the support and confidence shown by party stakeholders would further strengthen his commitment to the development of the state and the welfare of its people.
Also speaking, former Ekiti State governor Ayodele Fayose urged Ogun residents to support Adebutu and the PDP in the next election, describing the opposition party as the better alternative for the state.
Fayose said Ogun needed a new direction and called on voters to back the PDP if the state was to move forward politically and economically.
Party officials at the gathering also expressed confidence that the PDP would mount a stronger challenge in 2027 following Adebutu’s emergence as consensus candidate.
