Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu has responded to the public reactions that followed her recent remarks encouraging unemployed Nigerian women to consider small-scale business, including frying bean cakes, popularly known as akara, as a means of earning a living.
The First Lady said her comments were intended to encourage entrepreneurship, self-reliance, and economic empowerment rather than diminish the economic challenges facing many Nigerians.
Furthermore, she stressed that small businesses have historically provided sustainable livelihoods for millions of families across the country and have often served as the foundation for larger enterprises.
Entrepreneurship as a Path to Economic Independence
According to Senator Oluremi Tinubu, many successful entrepreneurs began with modest ventures before expanding into thriving businesses.
Furthermore, she noted that enterprises requiring relatively low start-up capital can provide an opportunity for individuals, particularly women and young people, to generate income while developing valuable business skills.
She explained that her advice was aimed at inspiring Nigerians to explore legitimate opportunities for self-employment and financial independence.
Addressing Public Reactions
The First Lady acknowledged the diverse reactions generated by her remarks, noting that public conversations on economic issues remain important in a democratic society.
Furthermore, she reiterated that her focus has consistently been on supporting programmes that improve the welfare of women, youths, and vulnerable groups through empowerment initiatives, skills acquisition, and entrepreneurship.
She emphasized that encouraging small businesses should be viewed as one of several practical approaches to promoting economic resilience rather than the sole solution to unemployment.
Commitment to Women’s Empowerment
Senator Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to initiatives that expand economic opportunities for women through the Renewed Hope Initiative and other intervention programmes.
Furthermore, she said empowering women with skills, access to opportunities, and entrepreneurial support remains essential for reducing poverty and strengthening families.
She expressed confidence that continued investments in entrepreneurship, education, and social intervention programmes would help more Nigerians achieve sustainable livelihoods.
Supporting Inclusive Economic Growth
The First Lady maintained that every legitimate business deserves respect because small enterprises contribute significantly to employment creation and grassroots economic development.
Furthermore, she encouraged Nigerians to continue embracing innovation, hard work, and enterprise while taking advantage of available opportunities to improve their livelihoods.
She reiterated that the administration remains committed to policies and programmes aimed at expanding economic opportunities and improving the well-being of citizens.
Therefore, Senator Oluremi Tinubu said her remarks should be understood as an encouragement for entrepreneurship and self-reliance, while reaffirming her continued commitment to initiatives that promote economic inclusion, women’s empowerment, and sustainable national development.
