The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, has congratulated the government and people of Bayelsa State on the 30th anniversary of the state’s creation, describing the milestone as a celebration of resilience, unity, sacrifice and collective commitment to development.
Lokpobiri, in a goodwill message marking the anniversary on October 1, acknowledged the contributions of generations of Bayelsans who have played different roles in shaping the state over the past three decades.
He also recognised the efforts of founding leaders, traditional institutions, religious organisations, professionals, youths, women and other citizens whose contributions have helped Bayelsa progress from its formative years.
Lokpobiri Celebrates Bayelsa at 30
According to the minister, Bayelsa’s 30th anniversary represents more than the passage of three decades.
Rather, he described it as an opportunity to recognise the dedication and sacrifices of citizens who have contributed to building and transforming the state.
Furthermore, Lokpobiri extended his congratulations to Governor Douye Diri, members of the State Executive Council, the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, the judiciary, traditional rulers, religious leaders and residents across the state.
He noted that every generation had contributed to Bayelsa’s journey in different ways, adding that the state’s development remains a collective responsibility.
From Creation to Development
Bayelsa State came into existence on October 1, 1996, following the creation of the state during the administration of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha.
Three decades later, the anniversary has provided an opportunity for residents and leaders to reflect on the state’s journey while considering the challenges and opportunities ahead.
Meanwhile, the Bayelsa State Government organised a series of activities to commemorate the anniversary, including cultural events, public discussions and an anniversary dinner and awards ceremony.
The state government has also used the occasion to highlight developments recorded across infrastructure, education, healthcare and other sectors.
Minister Recognises Contributions of Bayelsans
Lokpobiri stressed that Bayelsa’s development could not be attributed to one administration or group alone.
Instead, he highlighted the contributions of citizens from different walks of life.
Traditional rulers, religious leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, civil servants, youths and women have all played roles in the state’s development, according to the minister.
Consequently, he called for continued cooperation among the people as Bayelsa begins another chapter in its history.
He also urged residents to maintain the spirit of unity that has helped the state navigate its first 30 years.
Lokpobiri Highlights Current Development Direction
In his message, the minister also pointed to what he described as visible developmental strides across different parts of Bayelsa.
He said the state’s current alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda represents another significant strategic decision that could accelerate development and create greater opportunities for residents.
However, translating that alignment into tangible results will require continued cooperation among government institutions, communities, businesses and other stakeholders.
Therefore, Lokpobiri urged Bayelsans to sustain what he described as a positive direction while building on existing progress.
Renewed Hope Agenda and Bayelsa
The minister’s comments also place Bayelsa’s development within the wider context of the Federal Government’s economic and development agenda.
As an oil-producing state, Bayelsa occupies an important position in Nigeria’s petroleum industry.
The state hosts significant oil and gas activities, while the sector remains an important part of Nigeria’s economy.
At the same time, Bayelsa continues to face the broader development challenges associated with infrastructure, employment, environmental concerns and economic diversification.
Consequently, cooperation between the state and federal governments remains relevant to the development of infrastructure and economic opportunities.
A Call for Unity and Cooperation
As Bayelsa begins its next 30 years, Lokpobiri called for continued unity, cooperation and commitment among residents.
He argued that sustained development would require citizens to work together while supporting initiatives that can create opportunities and improve living conditions.
Moreover, he encouraged Bayelsans to build on the achievements of previous generations rather than focus solely on the challenges that remain.
The message comes as the state concludes a series of activities designed to celebrate its history and recognise individuals who have contributed to its development.
Bayelsa Looks Toward the Next 30 Years
The 30th anniversary has also generated discussions about the future direction of the state.
While leaders have highlighted achievements recorded since 1996, there remains an emphasis on addressing outstanding development needs.
Governor Douye Diri, during the anniversary celebrations, also acknowledged that Bayelsa still has more work to do while highlighting progress in areas such as roads, education and healthcare.
Therefore, the anniversary provides both a moment of celebration and an opportunity for reflection.
For Lokpobiri, the next three decades should build on the foundation established since the state’s creation.
“Greater Achievements” Ahead
Lokpobiri concluded his anniversary message by wishing Bayelsa sustained peace, development and prosperity.
He also expressed hope that the next 30 years would bring greater achievements and opportunities for residents.
As Bayelsa marks three decades of statehood, the minister’s message places emphasis on the people behind the state’s development while calling for unity and continued cooperation.
Ultimately, the anniversary offers Bayelsans an opportunity to celebrate their history, recognise those who contributed to the state’s progress and consider how the next generation can build on the foundation established over the past 30 years.
